About

We are a young family dealing with the global financial crisis in our own special way - packing up and touring Australia in our caravan! Come follow our journey

Cold night – warm days and creepy crawlies!

Welcome back! I hope you are enjoying keeping up with our journey! Thanks for visiting!

Day 4

We left Thora bright and early and headed towards Dangar Falls. It wasn’t far away but we gave the boys a break at the playground anyway and got a few snaps of the falls (can’t upload them as my battery is now completely dead and we haven’t got round to finding somewhere to buy a new charger.)

We headed towards Coffs Harbour through Megan – gorgeous drive albeit bumpy and sometimes a bit scary as the roads were narrow and bendy. Stopped off to buy an aerial for the tv at a caravan store we passed and then sped over to the Big Banana as the boys were sick of being in the car. Lunch was eaten on the grass outside the Big Banana and then we took the boys in for a chocolate banana – YUM!

On the road again we drove through Grafton and onto New Italy where we camped at the rest stop for the night. Not the most pleasant of places to stay – right by the Pacific Highway so very noisy – but it was only a night stop so we put up with it.

Day 5

Another early start and we stopped off in Lismore for a big food shop.  Next camp stop was Rummery Park in Whian Whian Conservation Area – west of Mullumbimby. It’s a gorgeous stop in the middle of an old state forrest – now national park – alongside a creek and beeming with fauna and flora.  Once we set up we just relaxed and enjoyed the serenity.

Kookaburra

Day 6

Went for a 5km bush walk to some falls.  Stunning track and Luca did so well walking all the way to the falls (Scott did very well carrying him back most of the way from the falls)  Scott picked up a hitchhiker along the way too – leach.  Luca managed to aquire some friends too in the form of 3 ticks and Jaz didn’t want to be left out so got one too! I did well removing Luca’s 3 but Jasper’s tick just wasn’t budging and so ending off beheaded – keeping and eye on that one!  Whilst sitting on the grass outside the caravan removing ticks, Scott picked up another sucker and was less than impressed. So I am the only one with distasteful blood it seems, but I am not complaining :)

To add to an already stressful day, Jaz was a nightmare to get to sleep that night and then managed to climb/fall out of the bed with a LOUD thud in the middle of the night – followed by a loud scream poor boy.

Goanna

Day 7

Being a weekend the campsite had filled overnight. We packed up early and made our way north once again, this time making it into Queensland. I had the coordinates set for James Sharpe Park near Canungra. Now I am in the process of working out if I am still messing up the GPS or if the Camps 5 coordinates are just wrong because we ended up turning into Defence Department grounds surrounded by ‘Live fire’ signs! We quickly (as quick as you can with a caravan) turned around and managed to find the camp spot 1km or so further along. Again, being a weekend, it was already very busy but we managed to find a spot right at the back.

Needed to do heaps of washing as the boys are getting filthy every day so its at least an outfit a day for them. I’m going to have well toned arms after this trip using my tumble washer :)

Must have been the coldest night so far but luckily we were able to have the generator running the heater!

Day 8

Woke up FREEZING to find all 4 of us in the same bed – not sure how or when that happened – Luca is getting far to good and creeping into our bed unnoticed. He must of dragged Jaz with him cos I don’t remember getting him either

Soaked up some sun in the morning and it got warm enough to wear shorts!! YAY! We drove down to Canungra and collected heaps of brochures etc. and then checked out the Lahey Tramway Tunnel. Luca just loved running through the dark. In the afternoon we drove up to Binna Burra. The views are amazing up there.

The generator is going full tilt again tonight. We’ll be doing some more daytrips tomorrow. Fingers crossed the boys sleep well – in their own bed!!!!

And so it begins…

Day 1
We left Anna Bay around 11am and made it to Point Plomer just after 4pm. The boys were pretty good in the car – Luca was kept busy watching Ben 10 for a bit before falling asleep. Jasper slept quite a bit of the way – only grizzling towards the end. We set up camp at Point Plomers Campground in Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve. Its a gorgeous spot right by the beach but it cost more than we would have liked. $10 per person and $7 for the car. The kids were free though luckily. The boys were pretty exhausted so were settled quite easily by 7:30ish and Scott and I got to relax by the fire for a while.
Day 2
It was a cold night but we woke to a gorgeous day that warmed up quite quickly. We decided  to head off again purely because of the cost. I set up the GPS with the coordinates of the next stop and we set off. Unfortunately I am still learning how to use the thing and I had the wrong format set so the GPS was directing us to somewhere 40km further away past Dorrigo. Luckily the general direction was right though so we didn’t go too wrong.  The GPs took us along Bowraville Road toward Bellingen – it was a narrow dirt track and half way to Bellingen the track was closed so Scott had to turn around in the narrow track. All part of the adventure though I guess. So we back tracked and headed back to the Pacific Highway. It wasn’t much further and we arrived at Roses Park in Thora. Its a nice gold coin donation camp on the river in a town featuring a wood mill and general store.  A very friendly stop all in all and much easier on the pocket. We had quite a bit of trouble settling the boys for the night as they had slept so much in the car. They were both finally asleep by 8:30ish. Jasper had a terrible night – up screaming for a lot of it. I’m hoping things improve as they settle into our new nomadic lifestyle.
Day 3
We decided to have a relaxing day giving the boys a break from the car so I’ve caught up of washing and had a chance to write all this up and also planning where to go next.

Day 3

We decided to have a relaxing day giving the boys a break from the car so I’ve caught up on washing and had a chance to write all this up and also planning where to go next.  Scott has promised to buy an aerial at the first opportunity to firstly allow me to watch Home & Away (Yes sad I know) and more importantly to stop me complaining about it :) I haven’t really been complaining about it. I’m actually enjoying not having TV.

Scott is having trouble relaxing. He is constantly looking for things to tinker with on the car or caravan. I don’t think he does ‘nothing’ very well.

We’ve got the caravan almost set to head off again tomorrow. Next destination is somewhere north east of Grafton ***fingers crossed***

Photos will be uploaded soon – I managed to put my camera charger in storage so need to sort that out quicksmart!

Till next time

Better late than never

The 2 months leading up to our departure were busy and rushed. We had started packing things away so the boxes were soon taking over and the house looked a bomb site. We were preparing the house for rental and had decided to give it a lick of paint outside and put on a new roof. The weekend that we painted the house we received an offer on the house and decided to accept it. Travelling around the country without a mortgage round our necks was the best thing. So we had to pack up all our stuff and find storage and get it ready to leave it for the last time. It was all chaotic and our first EDD (19 July) came round and we put off leaving for another week. We cleared the house – did numerous tip trips and runs to the storage place. Finally, on the Sunday we had decided to leave we threw all our stuff in the caravan  and headed off to Anna Bay where were stayed with Scott’s mum for a week. We left quite a bit of work left to be done at the house – thanks so much Dave, Paula & Paul for sorting it all out for us! We really appreciate all your help!
We arrived at Jill’s on the Sunday night and it hadn’t really sunk in yet that we’d left our house for the last time and now our lives were shoved into a caravan.
We spent the week in Anna Bay sorting out lastminute things like internet, phones, DVD for the kids and most importantly packing up the caravan properly – not to mention getting a bit of r&r to recover from the chaotic weeks leading up to our departure.
Sunday 2 August 2009 was the official start of our trip. We said our farewells to Jill & Peter and hit the road…

Birthdays, parties and packing

I can’t believe how time is flying! It’s crazy. My baby is turning 1 this month! And my big boy will be 3 next month! How did that happen?

So I am in the middle of planning a joint 1st, 3rd and ‘Bon Voyage’ party. Really don’t have the time to do 3 separate parties so figured one BIG one would do. I’m going to just tiptoe past my 30th and see if I can get away with pretending to still be 29 for another year. Although I guess starting your 30s with a wonderful trip around Australia with my 3 favourite people is actually pretty darn special!

Ozdyssey related… Beast is back from the doctor and has a shiny new rear!  Scott managed to get a folding table from the Op Shop for $10 – BARGAIN. It needs some TLC but it’ll do the job and it’s saving us $$$. We’re taking out the caravan table so there is room for the kids to play etc. and we’ll be able to use the folding table inside if needs be. I wish I could say I’ve knocked off more things from the list but unfortunately I can’t.

Scott should be finishing up at work today… or next week. It’s kind of up in the air at the moment. Not long left either way. He can then concentrate on finishing up a few things on the house so its rentable and getting the Disco back together so we can drive it up to his dads place. Oh – and not forgetting helping me pack!!!

Till next time

Worrisome Wide Wish List

I sat down last night and wrote out a list of things that we still need to get. It’s quite a scary list! Not so much in how many things we still need but more so in how much it is all going to cost! OUCHY!

Here it is, in no particular order:

  • camp chairs (I have my eye on particular chairs but have to convince Scott first :) )
  • folding table
  • fishing gear (not really sure what to get though… any advice?)
  • first aid kit
  • toys & games (this is a tough one…)
  • floor mat for under the awning
  • Spares for the Beast (this is a whole other list on its own)
  • GPS (and software to plan and track our way)
  • fly hats
  • saucepans
  • frying pan
  • jaffle iron
  • billy
  • innerspring mattress for the rapid
  • generator
  • sunnies

and a list of things that I would LIKE to have but really aren’t essential and we really have to wait and see what the bank balance says:

  • reversing camera for the caravan
  • ugg boots
  • camera for the kids
  • TV & things to make it work

I’ve been trawling ebay trying to find bargains but alas I am failing miserably.  I won’t give up…

A truck, rain and a roundabout

It is with sadness that I report that Beast (our cruiser) has had to go into the ‘doctor’.  Last week Scott was involved in an accident which left Beast needing a new tow bar and heaps of work to the back. Just what we need! :( I hate it when things like this happen. At least its all covered by insurance.

On his way home from work he was being tailgated by one of those tree cutting trucks – the ones with the mulcher on the back etc. – and I really don’t know what he was thinking seeing as it was raining and they were going down a steep hill. So as Scott started breaking on the approach to the roundabout the truck just couldn’t slow down fast enough and slammed into the back of Beast and pushed him down the hill and into the roundabout.  Luckily no one was hurt – apart from Beast that is.

Our last caravan outing a couple weekends ago was again a successful one. It was holiday park trial this time – which was nice but made me realise that I much prefer bush camping.

We stayed at Budgewoi Holiday Park and I guess if I was to stay in a caravan/holiday park again then I’d be pretty happy with somewhere like this. It has a great view out to the water, clean amenities close by, great playgrounds for the kids and at $20 a night I was pretty happy with it.

I guess the reason I prefer bush camping is that I don’t like having people right next to us – You have to worry about the kids making too much noise or just annoying the other people and just makes for a stressful time.

Starting to plan more detail

I’ve gone and got us a Camps 5 and am now trying to plan our trip a little bit more. We don’t want to plan too much – we prefer to wing it! But having only 6 months to travel roughly 20000km I think we need to plan a little. Got a few guide books and heaps of websites to research – so I think I am going to be quite busy! I’m going to pin up my map of Australia and see what I can come up with.

Now lets just hope the boys let me get stuff done!

P.S. We’re heading out with the caravan again this weekend. Let hope it’s another smooth trip!

First night in the caravan

We stayed in the caravan for the first time a couple of weekends ago. We decided to take the van up to The Pines just to see how we went – a mini test run. It was only one night but we enjoyed it and there were not too many hiccups along the way…
First problem being not being able to fill the water tanks – but Scott has sorted all that out now so we’ll have lots of water next time. We just filled a portable water container for the night.
Second problem – we didn’t think to do something to the microwave, that is, stop it opening and letting the plate fall out. We arrived at the Pines to find the inside of the caravan covered in broken glass. Not a good thing – even more so when you have a crawling baby!!
Cleaned it all up and settled in for the night. We had a pretty good spot with no one too close. Scott got a fire going and we had some dinner. It was quite easy getting the boys to sleep and so we got to spend the night around the fire toasting marshmallows and drinking some wine. It was great.
Luca woke up in the wee hours and ended up in our bed. Jasper was already there as it was too cold for me to not be under the covers. So the 4 of us shared the one double bed. Nice and warm but not very comfy.
Had breakie and packed up then made our way home late morning.
All in all it was a successful first trip – although hard not to be considering it was only one night. boys.jpg
Next time need to do something to secure the microwave!! After I find a plate to replace the smashed one!!
Also need to get a night light for Luca – the caravan was very dark in the wee hours and I think it freaked him out a bit.

Good News Bad News

Scott came home with some news today… In some ways it’s good news but in other ways it’s not so good news.
His contract has been extended for another month – which is great in that it means another months income for us. It’s not so great in that it means we most definitely won’t be leaving earlier than July and I was really looking forward to having Scott at home after tomorrow.
Lets focus on the positives though. That extra income will sure come in handy .
